How to Prevent Freezing Pipes
01/25/2010
It is not uncommon for temperatures in Canada to dip to minus 30 degrees Celsius. With these low temperatures we know that various hazards come along with it: higher chance of frost bite, inability to start vehicles, and freezing water pipes.
When it gets to be that cold the last thing you want to have to worry about is your family not having an operational water supply and damage being done to your home. Here are a few tips on how to prevent your pipes from bursting:
Insulate: install pipe insulation around the pipes of your home that are most likely to freeze. These are most likely to be ones that run along exterior walls. If there are some pipes that are more prone to freezing than others you can wrap them with electric heating tape.
Keep Water Flowing:on extremely cold days, leave a few faucets turned on so the water runs at a heavy drip. The constant movement will limit the chance the water has of freezing up.
You can also have an extreme temperature sensor or a flood sensor installed in your home. The temperature sensor will help alert you when the temperatures in your home are beginning to dip below safe levels. A flood sensor will let you know when a pipe has burst in your home so you can minimize the damage done.
