How to Prevent False Alarms
08/05/2011
An accidental tripping of an alarm by a pet or a member of your family can have costly consequences. Many cities and municipalities now charge a fee when police answer a false security alarm. You can easily avoid these charges by following these simple steps.
Educate yourself and your family on the system
Make sure that all users of the system are properly trained on how to arm and disarm the system. Keep a copy of the manual in a spot where any family member can access it if they should have any questions and you are not around. Keep a detailed list of all users who have access to the system so that you can update them should you make any changes to the PIN code or anything else.
Motion sensors are of particular concern. Pets, seasonal decorations and even furniture can affect the motion sensors. Even minor changes, such as repair work that you have done on your phone line, can affect the alarm system. Contact our helpful support staff if you have any questions about changes to your house or pets that may affect the motion sensors and alarm system.
Have your alarm system inspected yearly
Reliance Protectron will be happy to do a system inspection for you. We recommend an inspection once a year to make sure that everything is in good working order and the motion sensors won't be affected by any changes you've made in the home. Some charges may apply based on your extended service plan.
Free Enhanced Call Verification Program
Over 80% of false alarms are caused by user error such as doors being left open, codes being entered incorrectly, and other issues. Reliance Protectron offers a free Enhanced Call Verification program which will ensure that you receive a phone call from one of our monitoring centre operators before we call emergency services for you.
We will call your home first, then the first contact number listed, then the police. This way the police are only called if there is no answer at two of your numbers. We will then phone anyone else that you put on your contact list to inform them of the incident.
To become enrolled in the program, request a quote today, it's free.
Guard Response Service
Reliance Protectron offers the Guard Response Service for an additional monthly fee , and it can be added to any existing or new contract. This service ensures that a uniformed, trained security guard is dispatched to your location if an alarm is triggered. They will survey the situation and determine if police have to be called.
If you trip an alarm accidentally
If you do end up triggering a false alarm and the police come, contact our support centre right away to allow us to help you take preventative measures to prevent it in the future. In some areas, multiple false alarms are fined increasingly higher amounts each time the police are called, so if the problem can be determined quickly a repeat of the situation can be avoided.
If you have enrolled in our free Enhanced Call Verification program or with our Guard Response Service, no charges will be incurred to you except the extra charge for the Guard Response Service. If you are not enrolled in these services and the police have determined that you will be charged, they will send you a bill that is payable to them or the city.
If you have any questions about preventing false alarms, the Enhanced Call Verification program, or our Guard Response service, please contact us. We're always here to help protect what is important to you.
