Holiday Safety Tips

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year to spend time with friends and family.  From wrapping presents and putting them under the Christmas tree with lights, to lighting the menorah during Hanukkah, the holiday season is a time of merriment and celebration.  However, all of these lights, candles, sitting around a wood burning fireplace and wrapping paper can equate to a formula for danger.

Keep candles away from decorations and other combustible materials.  Remember to never leave a candle unattended.

Check all of your strings of lights before you plug them in.  Make sure no bulbs are broken and no wires are frayed.

When lighting a fireplace, ensure that the surrounding area is clear of any gifts or decorations and make sure to open the flue.  If you don't already have a carbon monoxide detector, look into having one installed in your home.

It's always important to turn your security system on when you are home or away, but an even larger emphasis is put on this during the holidays.  Burglars are on the prowl this time of year looking for vulnerable homes to break into.
