12/28/2009
Canada is well-known for its minus 30 degree Celsius weather.  Once the leaves fall, we Canadians know it’s time to reintroduce ourselves to icy roads, blizzards and big warm cups of cocoa (it can’t all be terrible).

To help you make sure to keep your family is safe and warm this winter here are a few helpful cold weather tips:

Dress Appropriately:  As much as we would like to, we can’t get away with wearing just a long sleeve shirt and heels outside during the winter.  Make sure you dress according to the weather, because you never know predicament you could get into.  Items to consider: mittens (keep hands warmer than gloves), toque, and scarf.

Check the Roads:  Make sure you check the weather reports before sending kids off to school or going out to work.  It may be fine and dandy when you wake up, but who knows what it will be like by 4:00PM.  Put an emergency winter kit together for your vehicle during the winter.  Include items such as: snow pants, boots, gloves, toque, shovel, flashlight, first aid kit, blanket, and a small bag of kitty litter (great for gaining traction in icy situations).

Secure Your Home:  Pipes during the winter months have a greater tendency to burst and leave you with a significant amount of damage to the surrounding area.  Get informed of when the temperature around your pipes is getting dangerously low.  An extreme temperature sensor in your furnace room, will enable to you rest assured that you won’t come home to frozen pipes.
