Basement Security: Is your basement inviting burglars?
You may not worry about the security of your basement because it is unfinished and used only for storage. Nevertheless, this area of your home is a popular point of entry for burglars. Once the burglar gets into your basement he or she can access the rest of your home with ease. Here are a few things that you can do to increase the security of your basement:
Remove the Cover:
Clear all bushes and large plants from in front of your basement windows. These act as covers for intruders, so neighbours and even yourself at home will not be able to see them breaking in.
Security System:
Have your security company install window contacts and motion sensors in your basement. Professional installers will know the ideal locations for these sensors. Make sure to place the window decals provided by your security company on the windows, so potential burglars are well aware that you have a security system installed.
Lock Your Basement Door:
If you have a door leading to your basement, make sure to lock it. This is one more layer of security for your home to keep thieves from accessing your upstairs.
Window bars are also an excellent way to secure your basement, but many homeowners choose not to use them because they don’t like the way they look on their home. Also, some people have concerns about the ease of escape if there were an emergency in the home and someone was in the basement.
Choose the method that you and your family are most comfortable with. The most important thing is to do something! Don’t let your home be a target for intruders.
